Barneys – The Window

Barneys was looking to re-design their content site The Window. They wanted a fresh look, but also to make it easier on content creators to create new content, and also manage how it’s presented on the site. It was also important to drive traffic from the posts to the online store.

I worked with the content team to determine what their pain points were when creating content. After becoming familiar with their process, and seeing where improvements could be made, we worked on simplifying the process and making it easy for them to enter content, while still giving them the flexibility to be creative.

As part of the collaborative process we iterated through a few different versions of the admin interface, arriving at a solution that allows them to use multiple post types along with custom fields to create their content easily.

I also built a system that allows them to retrieve current product data from the online shop and use that data to link to products easily from within their content.

It was also important to make sure that they were able to track the effectiveness of their content. So we did some deep Google Analytics Event Tracking integration with their links, making sure that we were capturing all the analytics data they needed.

The success of this project hinged on working closely with the content team to understand their needs and build a bespoke solution for them. The custom theme showcases their content on any device and the admin interface allows them to easily add that content.

Deliverables

A fully custom responsive WordPress theme to showcase their content. A customized admin interface to allow them to craft their articles easily and lay them out in interesting ways. Deep product linking integration to increase shop traffic from the blog.

Complexities

  • Custom menu system that allows featuring content within parent and child categories.
  • Multiple post types and admin controls to give content creators an easier way to craft stories.
  • Deep integration with products from Barneys online store. Allowing content creators to attach products to their articles and drive sales traffic to the online shop.

Ben is a highly skilled developer without a doubt. There are lots of developers with his skill set, but he stands out because of his communication ability. He worked closely with a graphic designer and me to create an incredible custom WordPress site that transforms the way we interact with customers. Ben clearly defined what could be accomplished, how long it would take, and then delivered on time. As a small business owner you have to rely on outside vendors to accomplish your vision for a website and I could not have done it without Ben.

Screenshot of Druva

Druva

I acted as the lead developer for the Druva corporate website, working closely with the Creative Director to tailor the corporate site. The site is built on WordPress with a custom theme, custom post types and some custom plugins as well.

I did the bulk of the development as well as set up the development and deployment workflow.

I have engaged Ben on two very complex, high visibility WordPress implementations. He’s written custom plugins integrating 3rd party functionality (Salesforce, Marketo, and several Google products) as well as extending WP itself as a CMS. He’s helped me theme these sites as well, although I handled most of the final front end markup. He’s extremely capable, honest, and forthright. I’ve entrusted him with root level access on corporate servers, MySQL administration, to establishing dev/staging/live workflows with Capistrano to excellent effect. He’s literally had the keys to the kingdom and always delivered. As for responsive sites I’d call that a requirement rather than a question of his ability. He’ll likely steer you to treat these devices as different states of the same data set (smart) and then counsel you to rely on an established markup framework to handle the different screen resolutions (also smart.) I trust Ben. He’s awesome.
